How can I automatically update the exe file on the client?
Desirable option: I post a new exe file to the network
the program on the user machine sees the file with a later date and replaces itself.

NO !!! They wrote about it more than once!
The only way is to make two executions: one starting, the other the program itself. The starter does the check and, if there is no new version, it launches the existing file, and if there is a new version, it writes the new exe and after it starts to calmly run.
And do DOS. program in the form of dll, though it is tempting in this case, but there may be problems: no one knows when MS will release these dll and whether it will be released in this session at all. Those. without rebooting in general, then nothing.
